What is Homeopathy?

Samuel Hahnemann, a German doctor, realised that the medicinal treatments of his day (c.1796) were doing more harm than good in treating patients..  Two thousand years previously Hippocrates realised that there were two ways to approach the treatment of illness - the way of opposites and the way of similars.

The medical treatment of Hahnemann’s day, and of the present day, focuses on the way of opposites.  If you have a symptom, medicine aims to remove it, kill pain, bring on sleep, kill bacteria, alter mood etc., often using large doses of powerful chemicals to do so.

Homeopathic medicine uses the way of similars.  This uses minute doses of a substance which, when used in large doses would bring on the symptoms being suffered by the patient.  For example we all know that if we drink too much strong coffee we will feel ‘hyped-up’, with a racing mind and be unable to sleep.  Minute doses of homeopathic coffee, when given to someone complaining of these symptoms, will enable the patient to calm down and sleep naturally.

What are homeopathic remedies, and how do I take them?

The ‘medicines’ a homeopath uses are called ‘remedies’.  They are dispensed as small tablets or pills made of sucrose or milk sugar.  Although they will all look the same the homeopath will medicate them differently depending on the prescription chosen for you.

The remedies are absorbed through the mucous lining of the mouth so they need to dissolve in the mouth.  They may be sucked or chewed like a sweet.

The remedies should to be taken on a clean palate, a neutral mouth uncontaminated by food particles or strong tastes.

Remedies, stored in a cool, dark  place away from strong smells such as aromatherapy oils, will remain active and usable for many years.

How long will treatment take?

The ‘rule of thumb’ here is to allow one month for every year you have suffered with the problem.

The older you are, the longer some symptoms may take to go.  Conversely, acute symptoms in children, such as severe earache, may disappear within minutes of taking the correct homeopathic remedy.

What if I’m  Vegan?

Tell your homeopath who can then make your remedies with sucrose rather than milk sugar pills or tablets.

What if I’m on medication?

These will not generally interfere with the remedies prescribed for you.  However, as your condition improves, with your doctor’s help you should be able to reduce your use of medications.  You will not be asked to stop taking prescribed medication.
